1. Agreement to terms

By accessing our website, registering on our Learner Portal, applying for our programs, downloading data from our repository, or using any services provided by the AI for Uganda Initiative ("we," "our," "us"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree with any portion of these Terms, you must immediately cease accessing our portal and services.

2. Eligibility and age requirements

To register for our cohorts, utilize the Learner Portal, or participate in our training courses, you must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. By using our services, you warrant and represent that you meet this age requirement. If you are under the age of eighteen (18) but at least sixteen (16) years old, you represent that you have obtained the explicit consent of a parent or legal guardian to agree to these Terms.

3. Academic honor code and code of conduct

As a student or registry member of our initiative, you are held to a premium standard of integrity and collaboration. By enrolling, you commit to our Academic Honor Code:

• Authenticity of work: All submitted code, machine learning model architectures, datasets, and assessments must be the result of your own intellectual efforts. Plagiarism, copying source code from other students, or using automated code generation to bypass learning objectives is strictly prohibited.
• Collaboration: While group discussion and conceptual collaboration are highly encouraged, sharing exact solution files, assignment scripts, or exam answers constitutes an honor code violation.
• Digital code of conduct: You agree not to engage in harassment, bullying, hate speech, or sharing offensive materials on our platforms (Slack, Discord, Learner Portal). You must not attempt to disrupt our digital services, distribute viruses, or scrape data through unauthorized scripts.

Violating the Honor Code or Code of Conduct will result in immediate disciplinary review, which may lead to expulsion from the program, revocation of certificates, and termination of portal access without a refund.

4. Public data repository and open licensing

Our initiative builds and hosts a localized public data repository to support AI research and open science in Uganda. Downloading and utilizing these datasets are governed by the following rules:

• Licensing: Unless otherwise specified, all public datasets made available for download in our repository are released under the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By v1.0) or the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. You are free to share, adapt, and build upon these datasets, provided you give appropriate attribution to the AI for Uganda Initiative.
• Data attribution: Proper attribution must include our name, the dataset name, and a direct link back to our repository.
• Restrictions: You agree not to use the datasets in a manner that attempts to re-identify anonymized individuals or violates the privacy rights of Ugandan citizens.

5. Intellectual property rights

• Our materials: All content, curriculum outlines, lecture videos, slide decks, proprietary tools, logos, and website layouts are the exclusive property of the AI for Uganda Initiative. You are granted a limited, personal, non-commercial, revocable license to access these materials during your cohort enrollment.
• Student-created models and code: You retain full ownership of the original code, software applications, and machine learning models that you write and develop independently during your studies. However, by submitting your work to our grading repository or capstone showcases, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, and display your project for educational, marketing, promotional, and research purposes.

6. Limitation of liability for research and predictions

Students and partners frequently develop predictive models during our programs (e.g., automated agricultural crop disease detection, healthcare diagnostic support, climate prediction, financial risk modeling). It is a critical condition of our services that:

• All algorithms, models, and predictions developed during our courses or hosted in our student showcases are intended solely for educational, academic research, and proof-of-concept purposes.
• These models are provided on an "as-is" and "as-available" basis. We make no warranties, express or implied, regarding their accuracy, reliability, clinical safety, or commercial viability.
• Under no circumstances shall the AI for Uganda Initiative, its directors, instructors, partners, or employees be held liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages (including, but not limited to, diagnostic errors, crop loss, financial losses, or system failures) arising from the real-world deployment or utilization of these student-written models.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

Our services and materials are provided without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not warrant that our digital portal, cloud GPU workspaces, or servers will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or free from viruses or other harmful components.

8. Governing law and dispute resolution

These Terms of Service and any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or in connection with them shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the Republic of Uganda.

Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of our services shall first be submitted to informal, amicable mediation between the parties. If mediation fails to resolve the dispute within thirty (30) days, the matter shall be referred to and finally resolved by the competent courts of law in Kampala, Uganda, which shall have exclusive jurisdiction.

9. Modifications to terms

We reserve the right to revise or update these Terms of Service at any time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated terms on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of our services after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
